Practice Sites
Our Community
Our Family Medicine Residency Program is a university-affiliated, community-based training program located in El Paso, Texas. El Paso has a strong presence of U.S. Military, Border Patrol, and DEA. Ft. Bliss houses one of the largest military bases in the U.S. and has the largest training area. Our diverse patient population makes this an excellent training program. Often, our patients present with advanced conditions, allowing our residents to see and treat problems they wouldn’t often see in other parts of the country. Our PGY-2 and PGY-3 residents also volunteer their time in free clinics in our community on the weekend. We are truly training physicians for the border and beyond!
Our Clinic
TTUHSC El Paso family medicine has been the neighborhood family practice of northeast El Paso for over 30 years. Our family medicine clinic is a 26,000-square-foot practice site for faculty, residents, and medical students, and is located 11 miles north of our teaching hospital, University Medical Center of El Paso (UMC). It features five patient care areas (including a sports medicine clinic), a large central precepting room, a dedicated procedure room, a behavioral science consultation room, a private resident lounge, a chief residents' office, and typical practice areas (reception area, phone room, business office, and medical records). It also houses the Department of Family and Community Medicine faculty offices, a large classroom, and an administration area. The family medicine clinic initiated use of an electronic medical records system in 2007 and began transitioning to its current patient-centered medical home (PCMH) model in March 2013.
The clinic is housed within UMC’s outpatient facility, which includes advanced imaging, pharmacy, and laboratory sites, and a rehabilitation unit. This facility opened in spring 2009 and contains services vital for our practice.
University Medical Center of El Paso
University Medical Center of El Paso (UMC) is a nationally recognized, top performing medical center, having earned awards and honors for excellence in patient care. It is a 346-bed facility, making it the largest public hospital on the U.S.-Mexico border. UMC’s Scherr Legate Level 1 Trauma Center is the only Level 1 trauma facility within a 280-mile radius of El Paso. That means UMC is the only hospital in the region to meet the stringent requirements established by the State of Texas and the American College of Surgeons for U.S. Trauma Centers, where specialists are available in life-threatening situations 24-hours-a-day, every day. This year in 2021, UMC's Scherr Legate Level 1 Trauma Center celebrates 20 years of providing the El Paso region the highest level of Emergency Care.
