Program Overview

The Breast and Abdominal Imaging Divisions of the Department of Radiology at TTUHSC El Paso jointly offers a 12-month, non-accredited fellowship in women’s imaging. This Texas Medical Board approved fellowship is designed for one fellow per year.  

This fellowship provides in-depth training in all aspects of breast and body imaging. State-of-the-art breast imaging equipment includes two Hologic’s 3D mammography units, two full field digital mammography units, two ultrasound units with high resolution transducers and Doppler capabilities, Affirm upright breast biopsy guidance system with dual stereotactic and tomosynthesis biopsy capability, and a 1.5 Tesla Siemens magnet with dedicated 16-channel breast coil.

Most cross-sectional body imaging studies are generated on-site with a 3T-Siemens magnet and multiple state-of-the-art multi-detector CT scanners. Studies are also performed on a 1.5T-Siemans and CT scanner located at an off-site outpatient clinic. Up-to-date imaging techniques and cutting-edge technology are utilized on a daily basis and incorporated into all imaging protocols.

The fellowship also offers ample opportunities for clinical research and teaching.

Clinical Experience

This one year fellowship combines six months in breast imaging and six months in cross-sectional body imaging. During the breast imaging rotations, fellows receive training in screening and diagnostic mammography, 3D mammography (breast tomosynthesis), breast ultrasound, breast MRI and breast interventions. Fellows will have the opportunity to actively participate in the interpretation of more than 18,000 breast imaging studies as well as perform more than 600 interventional procedures under supervision. Fellows will routinely participate in a bimonthly multidisciplinary breast tumor board during which management of new cancer cases are discussed by experts in surgical oncology, radiation oncology, medical oncology, pathology and radiology.

The body imaging component includes rotations in body MR, ultrasound and CT. Fellows will also receive training in hysterosalpingography, sono-hysterography and ultrasound-guided pelvic interventions.

Curriculum

The fellowship is divided into 13, four-week blocks. Typical rotation schedules include six blocks of breast imaging and interventions, four blocks of CT/MR, one block of US, one block of elective/research and two weeks of vacation. In addition, five conference days are also available to fellows along with an educational stipend to attend meetings.

There are multiple mandatory and optional multidisciplinary conferences, opportunities for formal and informal teaching of medical students and residents and ample opportunities for clinical research. Fellows are encouraged and supported to present their research at scientific meetings.

To be eligible for this fellowship, applicants must successfully complete an ACGME radiology residency in a US or Canadian program.
