Chairman's Welcome
El Paso Del Norte (“The Gateway to the North”) was founded in 1659. It shares much of its history with Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, a city of 1.5 million, and together, they form a vibrant multicultural environment.
Since 1976, the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center Paul L. Foster School of Medicine's Department of Psychiatry has been providing mental health care to improve the lives of those living in the Paso Del Norte region, train the next generation of physicians and psychiatrists, and be a site of innovative research.
In 2013, TTUHSC-El Paso became an independent health sciences university, now composed of the Paul Foster School of Medicine, the Gayle Hunt School of Nursing, the School of Dentistry, and the L. Frederick Francis Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. This balance of the medical professions allows TTUHSC El Paso to provide a rich environment for intellectual, professional, and personal growth.
We are the largest Department of Psychiatry on a US border, and our focus is providing research and training using language and culturraly sensitive across the life span. The breadth of treatment and training experiences includes child and adolescent psychiatry, mood disorders, neuropsychiatry, southwest brain bank, public psychiatry, inpatient psychiatry, C/L psychiatry, and the geriatric psychiatry.
In 2018, the Department of Psychiatry opened a Transmountain Department of Psychiatry in partnership with the Tenet Corporation’s Transmountain Hospital. This is a community-based psychiatry training program that will begin enrolling its first class of psychiatry residents in 2021.
The department of Psychiatry at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center Paul L. Foster School of Medicine’s faculty, staff and trainees are dedicated to improving the lives and mental health of the Paso Del Norte region. They are inspired and passionate about their work.
The arid setting of El Paso at the base of the Rocky Mountains offers year-round outdoor activities. With relatively low housing prices, a local emphasis on education, and growth of the TTUHSCEP makes El Paso an ideal area in which to work and train.
