Labor and Delivery Rounds
Board checkout
Board checkout is done in labor and delivery with a maternal fetal medicine physician. Those students who are assigned to comp OB and labor and delivery will be present. This will occur Monday through Friday 7:30 to 8 a.m. During this time, the night resident (usually a second year) will present all the patients who are in labor and delivery ("On the board") and discuss management.
Obstetrical faculty teaching rounds
The students who are assigned on comp OB and labor and delivery will do teaching rounds with the OB faculty and residents following board checkout. After faculty teaching rounds, ask the residents if any work needs to be done before leaving for your assigned activity.
Labor and Delivery
You will be assigned to 5 night shifts on labor and delivery ("night call"). Your shift will begin at 7 p.m. and will end after morning activities are completed (rounds on antepartum, morning report, board check out, and OB faculty teaching rounds). You will be able to leave between 8:30 and 9 a.m. Monday through Thursday. You will be expected to stay for lectures on Friday morning as long as you are not assigned to work Friday night.
Labor and delivery is on the 3rd floor of Thomason Hospital. This is a locked unit. You will need to use your identification badge to gain access. Medical student call rooms are provided in the basement of Thomason Hospital. Students utilizing the basement call rooms will be required to be immediately available. You MUST notify the resident on L&D if you leave the unit for any reason.
