What do you like about the program? There is a very supportive culture in the program. Attendings and co-residents are very open, compassionate, and interested in mentoring. I went to medical school in El Paso and when I interviewed at other programs, there was a big difference in the feel of other programs. Residents work hard but we have enough of a work-life balance to have strong relationships with family/friends, explore research/educational opportunities, and maintain outside interests.
This program gives amazing opportunities to see interesting psychopathology. El Paso
Psychiatric Center is one of the only state hospitals that still serves the community
directly with a walk-in service. We get exposure to forensic psychiatry and testify
in court as residents. The Child Psychiatry Fellowship and Child Psych Track are excellent
opportunities as well. I also love the opportunity to use Spanish regularly when working
with patients.
What do you like about El Paso? For a city 650K+ it still has a small town feel. It's very family oriented. Housing
is affordable, it's a safe city, and the traffic is much better than most major cities
of its size. The Mexican food is amazing and El Paso has a much more diverse food
scene than I expected when I first moved here. There are great outdoor areas within
a few hours. My family and I love going to Ruidoso/Cloudcroft N.M., White Sands, Carlsbad
Caverns, and other state/national parks nearby.
Interests: Child Psychiatry, Consult Liaison, Addiction, and Psychotherapy.
Passions: I love to cook! I just got a smoker and have been doing a lot of experiments with
brisket, pulled pork, and other BBQ dishes. I'm an audiobook and podcast enthusiast.
I love movies, TV shows, and plays. I love the outdoors, hiking, and exploring. My
wife and I enjoy traveling with our kids.
Career Goals: Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship. I'm still enthusiastically exploring and
excited to see what new passions I discover.
