Treatment-resistant depression is a severe form of major depression where symptoms are not adequately relieved after trying adequate doses of two different antidepressants for at least six weeks. This is not a rare condition; up to one-third of patients with major depression experience treatment-resistant depression. TRD may cause patients to struggle with daily life, which can also affect their loved ones. TRD may cause difficulty in managing life’s demands and also maintaining social connections. It can affect school, work, relationships and quality of life as a whole.
When standard treatment does not work, research shows TMS, VNS, and ketamine therapies can be helpful.
