Community Faculty Development Program

The Office of Faculty Development has coordinated with the Office of Continuing Medical Education (CME), the Department of Medical Education and the Department of Family
Medicine in recruiting community physicians to serve as preceptors for PLFSOM medical students.

In view of the busy schedules of community based faculty and varying levels of participation and involvement, we have adopted a multi-pronged approach in preparing our community based voluntary faculty for their roles as preceptors. These include the following:

  • Preparation of a 6 module faculty development program that is loaded on a flash drive and given to community based faculty members.
  • Community faculty are also encouraged to participate free of charge in the full FDC program.  Furthermore, the curriculum of this program is available online.
  • The Office of Faculty Development has purchased subscriptions to an innovative website known as Teaching Physician for our community faculty. Teaching Physician is a just-in-time tool for our valued community preceptors. Access is available at TeachingPhysician.org.

Teaching Physician offers videos and tips on a variety of medical education topics including orienting a learner and the principles of precepting. Up to 40 CME credits can be earned by reviewing the information on the Teaching Physician website.

Community faculty who are interested in this exciting online faculty development opportunity should contact the Office for Faculty Development at elpasofacultydevelopment@ttuhsc.edu for access.
