Distinction in Research and Scholarship (DIRS)

The Distinction in Research and Scholarship (DIRS) recognizes PLFSOM students who have completed the SARP course requirements and demonstrated exceptional engagement and proficiency in scholarship and research during medical school.


Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for DIRS, students must meet the following requirements:

  1. Academic Standing

    • Be in their third or fourth year of medical school.
    • Be in good academic standing with no professionalism issues (as determined by the Office of Student Affairs).
      Note: Students should verify their academic standing and any documented professionalism issues before submitting the DIRS application.
  2. SARP Course Completion

    • Successfully complete all Scholarly Activity and Research Program (SARP) course requirements with a passing grade.
  3. Research Projects

    • Projects for DIRS may include the SARP project and additional projects of the student’s choosing, provided the project execution occurred during medical school.

Application Process

A completed DIRS application consists of the following components:

  1. Personal Statement

    • A written statement outlining your research and scholarship journey.
  2. Curriculum Vitae (CV)

    • A detailed CV highlighting your academic and research achievements.
  3. Letter(s) of Support

    • Letters from faculty or mentors supporting your application.
