Physician / Preceptor Responsibilities

Community physicians and preceptors play an important role in providing students with meaningful clinical learning experiences. Responsibilities include:

  • Assign appropriate patients and clinical experiences to students.
  • Allow students time to review charts, interview patients, and perform examinations before entering the room.
  • Discuss patient cases with students prior to patient encounters.
  • Demonstrate and review relevant physical examination findings.
  • Encourage student participation in patient discussions when appropriate.
  • Review treatment plans, next steps, and recommended learning topics with students.
  • Provide opportunities for students to participate in clinical procedures appropriate to their level of training.
  • Review and sign student documentation in accordance with compliance and billing policies.

Student Mentorship & Evaluation

Preceptors are expected to support student growth through ongoing mentorship and feedback by:

  • Providing verbal feedback at the end of clinical shifts or days.
  • Completing student evaluations in a timely manner.
  • Supporting professional development and clinical learning.
  • Serving as positive role models in professionalism and patient care.

Faculty Development

Community Faculty members are encouraged to participate in annual faculty development activities designed to support excellence in teaching, mentorship, and medical education.
