Why you should give on El Paso Giving Day
Through my service on many nonprofit boards over the years, I have had the good fortune
of witnessing and supporting the meaningful service carried out daily by El Paso’s
nonprofit organizations.
Foster Scholar: Inspired to Make a Difference
In 2007, El Paso businessman Paul L. Foster donated $50 million to help create the
Paul L. Foster School of Medicine at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center
El Paso. His gift has also funded the tuition of dozens of medical students, known
as the Foster Scholars.
Gift Helps Underserved El Pasoans Receive Medical Care
El Paso Electric has a decades-long history of giving to the community. While the
company has made $100,000, $500,000 and even $5 million gifts to TTUHSC El Paso, its
smaller donations mean just as much.
Donor Helps Bring Change to West Texas
For more than two decades, the Paso del Norte Health Foundation (PdNHF) has supported
health and wellness in the Paso del Norte region — contributing more than $152 million
to the cause. Now, thanks to its largest grant yet to Texas Tech University Health
Sciences Center El Paso (TTUHSC El Paso), the foundation’s reach will go even further.
West Texas Hospitality Generates Strong Support, Friendship
When Monzer Hourani first arrived in Texas 50 years ago, he was sorely disappointed.
Where were all the cowboys and Indians? Not to mention the pistol-wielding bandits
and defenseless damsels of the frontier.
Multimillion Dollar Gift to Establish New Dental School in Texas
Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso is set to house Texas’ fourth
dental school, thanks to a $25 million gift from the Woody and Gayle Hunt Family Foundation. The Woody L. Hunt School of Dental Medicine (WLHSDM) will be the first to open in
Texas in nearly 50 years, and the first-ever in West Texas, and on the U.S.-Mexico
border.
Impacting the Region with a Meaningful Gift
Throughout the process of building his company, Paul L. Foster wanted to give back
to the community in a meaningful way. “I became convinced that building this medical
school was the most impactful thing we could do for this region – long term. Not only
in terms of health care, but in terms of economic development and all the other development
that would follow.”
