Placement and Employment of Graduates by TTUHSC El Paso Program

The Gayle Greve Hunt School of Nursing (GGHSON) offers a pre- and post-licensure Bachelor of Science in Nursing (B.S.N.) track to accommodate students who are seeking licensure and those who hold licensure as a Registered Nurse (R.N.). The GGHSON is one of many schools attempting to meet the rising demand for care given that the U.S. is projected to continue to experience a shortage of nurses, while baby boomers age and the need for health care grows.  As a result, newly graduating nurses have little difficulty obtaining employment as they prepare to enter the workforce.

Alumni surveys allow the GGHSON to record employment rates after graduation and more specifically identify the job sector.  Data collected from these surveys shows that B.S.N. graduates are more likely to gain employment in a hospital than in any other healthcare setting. Although less common, graduates have also indicated being employed in private practice, clinics, community nursing, home health, and schools.  Furthermore, the majority of graduates showed an interest in returning to school, many planned on pursuing a master’s or doctoral degree, while a few indicated that they were already enrolled in a graduate program.

In addition to the B.S.N. program, the GGHSON also offers students the opportunity to earn a Master of Science in Nursing (M.S.N.) in the area of leadership.  Because the program will be graduating its inaugural class in spring 2020, there is no employment data available at this time.  It is however anticipated that graduates from this program will seek employment in management and administrative positions in healthcare.

The L. Frederick Francis Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences currently offers the Master of Science (M.S.) in Biomedical Sciences and Post-baccalaureate Certificate in Biomedical Sciences programs.  Through its programs, the Francis Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences aims to increase the number of students entering graduate programs in biomedical and health-related fields of study, as well as create pathways to biomedical and health-related professional careers in the region.

The Francis Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences conducts exit surveys with all students at time of graduation, and maintains contact with alumni through regular e-mail communications every 6 months. Results from exit surveys and direct communications with alumni have revealed most Francis Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences graduates continuing into doctoral-level academic programs. Specifically, graduates of the Master of Science (M.S.) in Biomedical Sciences have reported placements in Doctor of Medicine (M.D.), Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.), Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.), Doctor of Physical Therapy (P.T.), Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.), and Physician Assistant (PA) programs. Graduates who have gone on to seek employment report having acquired college-level teaching positions, research positions in laboratories, including federal research laboratories, as well as positions with the Department of Health.  The majority of students who have graduated from the Post-baccalaureate Certificate in Biomedical Sciences program have enrolled in Doctor of Medicine and Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) programs.

The Paul L. Foster School of Medicine (PLFSOM) offers the Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree program, preparing students for future careers as physicians. PLFSOM medical students from each graduating cohort have successfully matched into highly competitive residency programs across the nation. The National Residency Match Program (NRMP) oversees the process that links choices of graduating medical students with preferences of residency program directors. PLFSOM results from the NRMP are provided in annual Match Day Results.

The Woody L. Hunt School of Dental Medicine is authorized to offer the Doctor of Dental Medicine (D.M.D.) degree program, in order to prepare students for careers as dentists. The WLHSDM is scheduled to enroll its first cohort of dental degree students in Fall 2021.
