Visiting Medical Student Subinternship

For the 2026-2027 Academic Year, Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso will be participating in the Visiting Student Learning Opportunities (VSLO) system.

Visiting medical students will have the benefit of a full educational experience, designed to mirror the duties of a first-year resident. Students will have the opportunity to rotate through a variety of subspecialties within the department, including trauma, sports, pediatrics, reconstruction, tumor, and hand.

Students will be treating patients at University Medical Center of El Paso (the area’s only Level I Trauma Center), El Paso Children’s Hospital, and additional outside hospitals in the region.

During the rotation, students are welcome and encouraged to attend all resident academics, wellness sessions, journal clubs, and group hangouts. Students participate in daily inpatient rounds, operative cases, and outpatient clinics. Students will also have the opportunity to shadow residents during overnight call during the rotation.

At the end of the rotation, visiting medical students will prepare a 10 to 15-minute presentation to the program at our academic conference.

We highly encourage you to explore our website, including Living in El Paso,  to learn more about our exciting program. We look forward to you rotating with us here at Texas Tech Health El Paso!

Preferred Dates

Texas Tech Health El Paso will be accepting sub-internship electives through the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation from June 2026 to April 2027 for the upcoming school year.
