Adult Psychiatry Residency Program

Welcome to the Psychiatry Residency Training Program at the Foster School of Medicine. Led by Dr. Silvina Tonarelli, our program is fully accredited by ACGME and dedicated to training culturally competent physicians skilled in diagnosing and managing psychiatric disorders.

Why Choose Our Program?

  • Comprehensive Training: A balanced focus on psychopharmacology and psychotherapy ensures graduates are well-prepared for board certification with the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.
  • Commitment to Well-Being: Our robust Wellness Initiative prioritizes resident well-being, featuring resident leadership and supportive resources.
  • Community-Based Learning: Residents train at major hospitals in El Paso and work with both university and community faculty.

Unique Learning Opportunities

Our location in one of the largest U.S./Mexico border regions provides exceptional training experiences, including:

  • Cultural Diversity: Collaborations with Paso del Norte Health Foundation and the University of Texas at El Paso.
  • Indigenous Health: Rotations with Ysleta Del Sur Pueblo’s Sacred Connections Mental Health Division, serving the only federally recognized Pueblo tribe in Texas.
  • Broad Exposure: A wide range of psychiatric conditions and diverse patient populations.

Academic Excellence

  • Strong Curriculum: A didactic core emphasizing neurology, psychopharmacology, psychotherapy, child psychiatry, geriatric psychiatry, and addiction medicine.
  • Research Opportunities: Engage in scholarly projects, clinical research, and presentations at regional and national academic meetings. Residents also have opportunities to publish in peer-reviewed medical journals.
