General Surgery Residency Program
Program Overview
Our General Surgery Residency Program accepts five categorical residents each year, along with three PGY-1 preliminary non-designated residents for a one-year general surgery residency experience.
Progressive Responsibility and Training
Resident physicians take on increasing responsibility for patient care as they progress through the program. By the chief year, residents hone their expertise while teaching and supervising medical students and junior residents, fostering their leadership and clinical skills.
Extensive Surgical Experience
Residents gain hands-on experience with an average of 1,100 surgical cases over the five-year program. Training emphasizes:
- Trauma care with a robust caseload.
- Hepato-biliary-pancreatic surgery and related specialties.
- Comprehensive exposure to general and specialized surgical procedures.
All clinical and educational activities are guided by dedicated faculty members to ensure a well-rounded experience.
Diverse Rotations
Rotations provide exposure to a broad spectrum of surgical disciplines, including:
- General Surgery
- Vascular Surgery
- Trauma Surgery
- Plastic Surgery
- Cardio-thoracic Surgery
- Pediatric Surgery
- Endoscopy
- Critical Care
- Colorectal Surgery
- Minimally Invasive Surgery
Research Opportunities
Residents have opportunities to participate in clinical research, and quality improvement (QI) projects in collaboration with Texas Tech Health El Paso faculty and affiliated hospitals. These experiences provide opportunities to engage in meaningful scholarly work while expanding their clinical, academic, and practical expertise.
