Geriatric Psychiatry Fellowship

The Geriatric Psychiatry Fellowship at the Paul L. Foster School of Medicine (PLFSOM) is a one-year, hands-on training program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). With two positions available annually, our mission is to train the next generation of clinical and academic leaders in geriatric psychiatry. Applications are now open.

Program Highlights

Comprehensive Training

Fellows gain expertise in evaluating, diagnosing, and treating late-life mental and neurocognitive disorders across diverse settings.

Collaborative Partnerships

Training is conducted in collaboration with leading institutions, including:

  • Bienvivir All-inclusive Senior Healthcare (BASH)
  • University Medical Center of El Paso
  • Texas Tech Physicians outpatient clinics

Diverse Clinical Experiences

  • Inpatient care at the Acute Care for the Elderly (ACE) unit
  • Outpatient services
  • Consultation-liaison psychiatry
  • Community-based and long-term care settings

  • Late-life psychopathology and neurocognitive disorders
  • Evidence-based pharmacotherapy and psychosocial interventions
  • Sociocultural, legal, and ethical considerations in geriatric psychiatry

Interdisciplinary Collaboration

Fellows work alongside faculty and professionals in geriatric medicine, family medicine, neuroradiology, nursing, social work, and other fields in multidisciplinary settings.

Leadership and Teaching

Fellows develop skills as team leaders, teaching medical students, residents, and multidisciplinary team members while providing continuity of care.

 

Research and Scholarly Opportunities

Fellows participate in clinical and research electives, working with dedicated mentors on scholarly or research projects. Graduates are well-prepared to pursue the ABPN’s Examination for Added Qualification in Geriatric Psychiatry.
