Medical Student Research

At Texas Tech Health El Paso, we prioritize fostering a culture of discovery and innovation in our medical students. Our department offers multiple research opportunities designed to enhance your academic journey and support your career aspirations.

Student Academic Research Projects (SARP)

As part of the degree program, all Texas Tech Health El Paso medical students must complete a Student Academic Research Project (SARP). Our department actively participates in this initiative, providing mentorship and resources for students.

  • Each Principal Investigator (PI) can mentor up to five SARP projects per class year, per SARP regulations.
  • Projects align with our commitment to advancing orthopedic research and student development.

Beyond the Basics: Additional Research Opportunities

Interested in going beyond SARP? Our department encourages students to engage in extracurricular research projects that:

  • Deepen your understanding of orthopedics.
  • Strengthen your residency application, particularly for the highly competitive orthopedic specialty.

Our coordinators, PIs, and residents collaborate to create a supportive and hands-on research environment. You'll receive valuable training while contributing to impactful research.

Our Commitment to You

We are dedicated to providing opportunities that:

  • Cultivate a passion for research.
  • Build skills that will benefit you throughout your medical career.

Note: If you join or initiate a research project with our department, we expect you to commit to its completion to the best of your ability, even if your specialty interests evolve over time.

How to Get Started

Ready to dive into research? Here’s how:

  1. Identify a Principal Investigator (PI) whose work aligns with your interests.
  2. Email the PI directly to express your interest and indicate if you’re seeking a SARP mentor.

We look forward to supporting your journey in orthopedic research!
