Our Mission

The Center of Emphasis in Neurosciences (COE-N) is dedicated to pioneering research in genetics, psychiatric disorders, neurodevelopment, and optic trauma. Our interdisciplinary team of scientists, faculty, and clinicians specializes in: Genetic and environmental factors influencing psychiatric disorders, Eye diseases and optic nerve trauma research, and The genetic development of the nervous system A key initiative at COE-N is the development of a population cohort bio-bank, a first-of-its-kind resource in the U.S., which enhances genetic research across multiple diseases and increases representation of minority populations in large-scale studies.

Key Research Areas

Population-Based Genetic Research & Bio-Banking

  • Developing a nationwide-unique bio-bank to collect population-based samples.
  • Facilitating research in neurological and psychiatric illnesses, cancer, diabetes, and more.
  • Supporting NIH-funded data sharing initiatives for broader scientific impact.
  • Enhancing genome-wide association studies by increasing the statistical power of underrepresented Hispanic populations.

Genetics & Psychiatric Disorders

  • Gene mapping to identify the underlying causes of major mental illnesses.
  • Developing treatment strategies based on genetic insights into psychiatric conditions.
  • Investigating how environmental and psychological factors influence mental health.

Special Senses & Optic Nerve Research

  • Studying genetic eye diseases affecting vision and neural development.
  • Researching optic nerve trauma to develop new therapies for recovery.

Mental Health in Latin American Populations

  • Specialized expertise in serious mental illnesses affecting Hispanic and Latin American communities in the U.S., Mexico, Caribbean, and Central & South America.
  • Clinical research dedicated to diagnosis, treatment, and intervention strategies.
