Program Overview

The Surgical Critical Care Fellowship at Texas Tech Health El Paso equips fellows with the expertise to:

  • Deliver exceptional surgical and trauma critical care.
  • Conduct and disseminate impactful research.
  • Educate residents and students effectively.
  • Lead and manage critical care units with confidence.

Key Competencies

Over the one-year fellowship, participants will:

  • Acquire the knowledge needed to excel in the surgical critical care certifying exam.
  • Gain hands-on experience managing surgical intensive care units and trauma patients.
  • Develop research skills, including formulating questions, analyzing data, and presenting findings.
  • Prepare and deliver a clinical scientific abstract and a one-hour CME presentation.

Career Readiness

Graduates will be fully prepared to:

  • Serve as surgical critical care attendings.
  • Publish research in medical or surgical journals.

Training Components

  • Primary Rotations: A minimum of eight months in surgical critical care (as per ACGME requirements).
  • Elective Rotations: Options include Cardiac ICU, Neuro ICU, Trauma, or PICU.
  • Simulation Training: Focused on end-of-life care for ventilated patients.
  • Conferences: Monthly trauma morbidity and mortality discussions with root cause analysis and Clavien-Dindo classification.
  • Didactics: Material on identifying and addressing near-miss events.
