Pediatric Clerkship
The Department of Pediatrics is dedicated to providing students with an exceptional education in pediatric care, emphasizing both clinical skills and advocacy for the health and well-being of children.
Integrated Curriculum
The Pediatric and OB/GYN clerkships are combined into a unique 16-week block (8 weeks Pediatrics / 8 weeks OB/GYN), allowing students to follow patients from prenatal care to their first well-baby checkup.
Clinical Training Sites
Students gain hands-on experience at state-of-the-art facilities, including the El Paso Children's Hospital. This affiliation enhances education, research opportunities, and career development in pediatrics while improving the quality of care for children in the border region.
Fourth-Year Electives
The department offers a variety of electives, with new specialties being added due to the expansion of pediatric services. Current electives include:
- Pediatric Pulmonology

Clerkship Goals
The pediatric clerkship prepares medical students to:
- Manage the health care of both healthy and sick children.
- Advocate for pediatric health and well-being.
- Develop skills to support children and families across diverse clinical settings.
