Research and Scholarly Activity

Research and Scholarly Activity Program (RSAP)

The Department of Internal Medicine is dedicated to fostering research and scholarship, with our Research and Scholarly Activity Program (RSAP) guided by Boyer's Model of Scholarship, under the direction of Maria Theresa De Gracia Opina, M.D. This model emphasizes four key areas:

  • Discovery: Building new knowledge through original research.
  • Integration: Connecting findings across disciplines to create a broader understanding.
  • Application: Using research to address real-world problems.
  • Teaching: Commitment to lifelong learning and knowledge sharing.

Mission Statement

Our mission is to support residents in developing research skills and engaging in meaningful scholarly activities throughout their training. We believe that mentored, hypothesis-driven research enriches critical thinking and strengthens ties within the scientific and medical communities.

Program Goals and Objectives

We encourage all residents to participate in the RSAP to:

  • Cultivate scientific curiosity and contribute to advancements in medical knowledge early in their careers.
  • Support career exploration and development, particularly for those interested in fellowships or academia.
  • Enhance the residency program's regional and national reputation through resident-led scholarly achievements.

Program Structure

The RSAP structure is designed to provide comprehensive research training and support:

  • Introductory Seminar Series: Weekly sessions on research methods and design for PGY-1 residents.
  • Mentorship: Residents are paired with mentors in their area of interest to guide their research journey.
  • Research Proposal: Residents submit a proposal to the Internal Medicine Research Committee, with feedback provided prior to project approval.

Presentation Opportunities

We actively encourage residents to present their work at regional and national conferences, including:

  • American College of Physicians Annual Conference
  • Society of Hospital Medicine Annual Conference
