Cardiovascular Medicine

The Cardiology Fellowship program at Texas Tech Health El Paso was accredited in 2011 and recruited our first two fellows in 2012. The goal is to train and retain physicians to practice in the underserved U.S.-Mexico border area.

The Division of Cardiology currently has a total of eight cardiology fellows recruited from top medical schools and residency programs. The program aims to train clinical cardiologists to care for patients with skills and compassion to serve as consultants and colleagues with other health care providers. They are trained to be excellent clinicians with a focus on exposure to invasive and  noninvasive evidence-based medicine, and quality improvement initiatives. We have outstanding clinical and research training in cardiovascular disease.

With the high numbers achieved during their rotations, our fellows are expected to pass Nuclear and Echo Boards in addition to the essential ABIM Cardiology Boards.

Our primary training site provides excellent clinical experience in the

• Cardiovascular ICU.
• Consult service.
• Cardiac catheterization laboratories.
• Noninvasive cardiology laboratory (EKG, echo, stress and nuclear cardiology).
• Electrophysiology.
• Structural and congenital heart disease.

We have developed an excellent partnership with the cardiac surgery group at our primary teaching site, which has produced an increase in both volume and quality outcomes of surgical/structural cases.
