Advancing Family Medicine Research
The Research Division of Family and Community Medicine at Texas Tech Health El Paso Paul L. Foster School of Medicine is committed to improving health outcomes for the predominantly Hispanic U.S.-Mexico border population. Our mission is to advance family medicine through high-quality research in primary care and population health—working to eliminate health disparities and enhance community well-being.
Our Research Focus
We specialize in cancer prevention and control, aligning closely with the Center of Emphasis in Cancer to address a critical public health challenge. Cancer is the leading cause of death among Hispanics in the U.S., and our community faces a disproportionately high burden of:
- Breast Cancer
- Liver Cancer
- Cervical Cancer
With lower screening rates and late-stage diagnoses affecting survival, our research prioritizes early detection, prevention, and treatment innovations for these cancers.
Key Research Areas
Our dedicated faculty lead studies in:
- Hispanic & Rural Health Disparities
- Colorectal, Breast, Cervical, Hepatocellular & HPV-Associated Cancers
- Obesity Prevention & Treatment
- Behavioral Science & Health Promotion
- Patient-Provider Communication
- Community-Based Participatory Research
Our Impact
Since 2010, our research faculty have secured over $20 million in funding from prestigious organizations, including:
- National Cancer Institute
- American Cancer Society
- Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT)
- Susan G. Komen Foundation
With strong institutional support, access to a diverse clinical and community population, and a multidisciplinary team, we continue to drive research that makes a meaningful impact.
