‘This is very encouraging for cancer patients’; El Paso doctor explains what new CDC vaccine guidelines mean for those fighting cancer

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently updated guidelines on who can receive a COVID-19 vaccine. Individuals with weakened immune systems were included among the new list of who the agency said could receive a vaccine. ABC-7 at Noon spoke with Dr. Karinn Chambers, the Medical Director of the Texas Tech Physicians of El Paso Breast Care Center, to find out what the new guidelines mean for patients battling cancer.

‘I know that they need us’; medical and nursing students help on the frontlines during COVID-19 pandemic

Many frontline heroes have emerged in 2020. Many individuals have put their own lives at risk for the benefit of others, such as teachers, bus drivers, grocery store workers, doctors, nurses and EMTs. There's another group too that's working behind the scenes to help: nursing and medical students. Aragon is a fourth year medical student at the Paul L. Foster School of Medicine. He's one of roughly dozens of nursing and medical students who have stepped up in El Paso's fight against COVID-19.

Profesionales de atención médica de primera línea, así como estudiantes y residentes del Centro Tecnológico Universitario de Ciencias de la Salud de El Paso (TTUHSC, por sus siglas en inglés) que tienen contacto directo con los pacientes, comenzaron a recibir sus vacunas luego del envió de 3 mil dosis de la vacuna contra el Covid-19 de los laboratorios Moderna. Desde el 23 de diciembre hasta el fin de año y del 2 al 4 de enero las vacunas serán aplicadas en las clínicas de Texas Tech ubicadas en el área central y dos más en el Noreste de la ciudad. TTUHSC El Paso tiene casi 2,000 empleados, 765 estudiantes y 249 residentes, lo que incluye a TTP El Paso, el brazo clínico de Foster School of Medicine.

UTEP frontline workers immunized in TTUHSC El Paso's COVID-19 vaccination program

Approximately 100 members of The University of Texas at El Paso’s Coronavirus Proactive Testing and Vaccination programs received the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine Monday thanks to the University’s ongoing partnership with Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso. “UTEP and TTUHSC El Paso have been working together throughout the pandemic,” UTEP President Heather Wilson said. “TTUHSC El Paso President Dr. Richard Lange reached out over Christmas and offered to vaccinate our UTEP testing and vaccination teams. We are grateful for the partnership.”
