Hospitals are concerned about a possible shortage of ventilators as more Americans require treatment for COVID-19, the novel coronavirus disease that can cause life-threatening respiratory problems such as pneumonia. a collaboration between Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso and the University of Texas at El Paso could help solve the problem. Using 3d printing, the team of physicians and engineers have developed an innovative, low-cost ventilator for the health care sector. Scott Crawford, M.D., associate professor and director of TTUHSC El Paso’s Training and Educational Center for Healthcare Simulation, is helping lead the initiative to manufacture the shoebox-sized devices.

Gun sales surge in El Paso during virus pandemic

One psychiatrist with Texas Tech Physicians of El Paso says guns could give people a sense of control amidst the uncertainty that has come with the pandemic. "No one really knew what was going on," Dr. Fabrizzio Delgado said. "No one really knew how to treat it and no one really knew how long it's going be. We still don't know. That was the reason why so many people were feeling a sense of fear, a sense of loss of control." Dr. Delgado says the trends in sales do not surprise him, but he believes they will stabilize soon as more businesses reopen and the world feels more like it used to.

El Paso hospitals and physicians, looking for a delicate balance between social distancing, patient care and maintaining their personal protective equipment supply, are tapping into the power of telemedicine during the COVID-19 outbreak. Nationally, according to analysts at Forrester Research, telemedicine or virtual health-care visits are on pace to pass 1 billion by the end of 2020.

“Telemedicine is proving that this is helping to reduce the use of PPE, which is in such shortage,” Dr. Diego De La Mora, chief health informatics officer at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso, said. “We have to establish whether or not to triage a patient. A person may say they have symptoms that compare to COVID-19 and they don’t know whether or not to come in. I’m able to take their medical history and observe whether to bring them into the hospital. Telemedicine allows us to find the best path for a patient.”
